When the Faubourg Tremé Free Colored Militia and Burial Society sets out to bury one of its members in the summer of 1836, no one expects the accident that reveals the wrong body in the coffin. The body is that of Hannibal Sefton, friend of Benjamin January. January is soon drawn into a web of blackmail and murder.
