The mariners of Kirkcaldy and west Fife, 1600 - 1700

Books, Manuscripts
Kirkcaldy and the nearby ports of Dysart, Wemyss, Leven, Burntisland and North Queensferry have long played an important role in Scotland's domestic and international trade. During the seventeenth century these ports made a significant contribution in the distribution of locally produced raw materials, especially coal and salt, and foodstuffs, particularly fish, to overseas markets ranging from the Baltic to the Bay of Biscay, and returning with cargoes of wine from France or Spain, or colonial produce, such as tobacco, spices and dyes, obtained in the Staple Ports of Veere, Middelburg, and Rotterdam. While the overall trading links are generally well known to historians there is no single source available identifying the ships, the skippers and their crews. This booklet brings together information on the mariners of Kirkcaldy and district largely to be found in documentary sources held in the Scottish Record Office, and is based on original research undertaken in Edinburgh and St. Andrews.
