In these day of satnav, it's perhaps strangely nostalgic to reflect on how our forefathers ascertained their sense of distance and direction. Milestones, and variants such as fingerposts, provided that surety. Made a statutory requirement under the Turnpike Acts of the 18th century, these artefacts have become treasured 'furniture' on our roadside verges and worthy of protecting, and maintaining, as much a part of our socio-economic history as they are integral to our nation's transport heritage. Canals and railways, which opened Scotland to industrial expansion and now serve both tourist and local community, also had their distinct distance markers. 'Are We Nearly There Yet?' chronicles the development of these eye-catching milestones across Scotland, in a whsitle-stop tour of the most noteworthy and interesting, capturing something of the location and the communities within which they are to be found.
