Early Scottish gardens : a writer's odyssey

Mackay, Sheila2001
Books, Manuscripts
As stated in the preface, this book seeks to answer the question 'What did early Scottish gardens look like? How did these gardens relate to the house and how did passing time affect their development? Where did the plant stock come from?' It seeks to challenge the dismissive views prevalent in British garden histories regarding Scottish designed landscapes prior to the eighteenth century. Instead, the author examines the development of early Scottish gardens in a European rather than an Anglocentric context and argues that in Scotland, elaborate gardens were required to equal the grandeur of houses and interiors, reflecting concepts of status, wealth and self-esteem. The book is illustrated throughout with black and white plates and there are also sixteen colour plates. There is also a map detailing the locations of the various gardens discussed.
