The Auld Grey ?Toun with its Abbey and Palace and it association with Kings and Queens. Eric Simpson writes about the towns people during the time of Carnegie's lifetime. Dunfermline in Carnegie's childhood was hand loom weavers of which Carnegie' father was one of the 3.000 who worked long hours in their homes or in small workshops. The author goes on to describe the transformation in the town with rise of new power loom factories. Examines the rise and decline of the mining industry. religion and politics, schools and poor relief, health and housing, police and prisons. In this century he mentions royal naval base in Rosyth and the benefits to the town has from Carnegie.
