James Wilson began writing his Journal in January 1879 when he was nineteen years old and the entries continued until 1892. The volume covering the period between January 1882 and June 1885 is missing, but the extant three volumes provide a detailed record of rural life in late nineteenth-century Scotland. Wilson also kep a separate book that recorded many of his poems, essays and short stories, selected correspondence and lectures given to local organisations such as the Deskford Mutual Improvement Society.
